Beauty Bag Basics: Priceline Edition

Like other confusing things, makeup is scary if you don't know what you're doing or how to start. And once in a blue moon you will stumble on to an amazing makeup tutorial only for all the products used to be only found in Europe or America or Narnia. Because come on, we are in Australia and America is essentially as far away as Narnia. So I have put together a basic makeup kit with everything in it being available at your local Priceline. Here is what you will need:

The Makeup Bag
For all my cosmetics that I reach for everyday, I use the Models Prefer Train Case. It is the perfect size for all your every day essentials and it can surprisingly fit quite a lot of products. The case also has a zip compartment in the top, so you can store all those little products without them getting lost under big bottles of foundation.

The Foundation
I'm all for long wear foundations, even if you are only popping out for a few hours, purely for the fact that long wear foundations have greater coverage and are non transferrable; which means when you hug your bestie that you haven't seen in a few weeks, you won't get foundation all over her adorable Portmans blazer. My favourite is the Revlon Colorstay Foundation Combination/Oily Skin SPF 15. I have the shade 110 Ivory and I have been dedicated to this foundation since I first started wearing makeup when I was 16. Because it is the wonderful combination of being long wearing and for combination/oily skin, this means that it will not only last all day but you won't get that shine on your T-Zone in the afternoon, which is when makeup generally begins to slide around. It also has a small amount of SPF which is great because YAY for extra sun protection. Only fools don’t wear sunscreen everyday, wrinkly fools.

The Concealers
Essentially for everyday makeup you really only need two different types of concealers, one for colour correcting (pimples, hooray) and another for brightening (darkness, hooray). Maybelline has you covered in both these departments with their Cover Stick Corrector Concealer in Green and the Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Circles. These are the cheapest concealers that I have found that can actually hold their ground in a battle with the pricier department store brands like Napoleon Perdis and MAC. I use both every time I do my makeup for every occasion whether it’s going to work or out with friends, these two little products cover all my bases. For more rambling on these two prodz check out my previous post Conceal Don’t Feel right here: http://aimeeandsugar.blogspot.com.au/2014/08/conceal-dont-feel.html

The Powder
The best makeup related rule I’ve learnt from makeup artists that paint my face for weddings and events is to never ever (like ever) use a coloured powder over foundation. It just looks cakey and gives you a ghastly looking face in photos; much like using SPF foundation when you know you will be having your photo taken with a camera flash (at night of course, always always use it during the day), it is a big no no. So when you are putting that dusting of powder over your base of liquid or cream foundation and concealer, always stick to a translucent powder. It is colourless but still does the job of setting your makeup. How clever! My favourite is the Face of Australia Translucent Loose Powder. It cost me $11.95 from Priceline and there is just so much of it. Because you only have to dust on the smallest amount, this tub of goodness will last you a very long time. Bonus: Face of Australia does not test on animals and they are a great Aussie owned company.

The Mascara
Like with my purchasing habits of heat protectant, I never like to buy the same mascara twice. There are just so many different types and price ranges of it that I think it is just better to try a new one each time the one I’m currently using dries up. Though in the past few months, I have broken this rule and kept on buying the same mascara. The one that stole my fluttery lashes is the Maybelline The Falsies Volum' Express Flared Mascara. It is cheap, especially when there is a sale at Chemist Warehouse and delivers the same type of results as ‘They’re Real’ by Benefit at a fraction of the cost.

The Brow Gel
I don't know about you, but my eyebrows, much like my hair, is out of control. All those follicles have a mind of their own and throughout the day they will just be all over the place unless I have brushed through a brow gel. Currently I’m using the Australis Extender Lash & Brow and it is doing a marvelous job. In the past I have previously used the pricey Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Gel and I can honestly not tell the difference between the two. So save some dollars and go for the Australis, a great company that is Australian owned and are 100% free of animal testing. They also offer a range of vegan friendly products free from ingredients such as beeswax. Though after a few uses the colour gets a bit ghastly but that doesn't matter at all as it still does the job!

The Balm
Lucas Papaw Ointment is a staple that is found in many bathrooms across Australia, but I only jumped on the bandwagon this year. At first I didn’t really like it and the first tube that I brought I actually threw in the bin. I found it oily and greasy and the smell reminded me of Cheetos Cheese and Bacon balls. Then a few months later I was at a friends house getting ready and needed to borrow some lip balm to pop underneath my lipstick to stop it from drying out and all she had was Lucas Paw Paw ointment. It kept my lips hydrated and stopped the product from sliding around and looking lackluster. I still think that it smells like cheese and bacon balls and I’m not the greatest fan, but it does wonders for prepping the lips and keeping them hydrated while wearing other lip products, so for that purpose I will always keep a tube in my everyday makeup bag.

The Brushes
As much as I love my brushes by Bobbi Brown and MAC, I am not so much of a fan of the individual price tags attached to them. And if I had brought all my brushes from EcoTools first, I probably would not have spent such a serious amount of coin in the siren like section of David Jones. Currently I have in my mitts the foundation, powder, tapered blush, full eyeshadow and angled eyeliner brushes. EcoTools pride themselves on earth friendly beauty and showing respect for the planet by using materials that have low impact on the earths resources; such as bamboo handles, 100% cruelty free taklon bristles and making the ferrules of the brushes out of recycled aluminum. The packaging the brushes come in is also made from natural cotton and hemp and are completely recyclable. The powder brush is the fluffiest and most divine powder brush I have ever used and distributes the Face of Australia translucent powder delicately on the face without disrupting the existing foundation. Also I do not use the angled eyeliner brush for eyeliner but to fill in my eyebrows, as it is the perfect shape and size to complete the job. Brushes using synthetic bristles also take much less time to dry, so you are more likely to wash them. It is positives all around!

I know there isn't that much variety with the brands I’ve featured but these are the ones I just keep coming back to because the quality they offer for the low price attached makes them hard to pass up on.
